Ohrid

I didn’t have high expectation to Ohrid, or to North Macedonia itself. I just love to travel, so no matter what the outcome is, to me it’s an adventure either way. But let me tell you about Ohrid, my favorite place in North Macedonia.

My first meet with Ohrid was walking in from the Park Plaza Golden View hotel. The town was gorgeous! I loved getting closer and closer, cause I realized it was going to be much better than I expected. The town itself reminds me a lot about Old Town Dubrovnik, Croatia, only more and bigger. What I found so charming was the narrow, cobblestoned streets, the red roof tiles and the medieval architecture. It feels like you’ve traveled back in time. And the best part, you can explore the city without the huge waves of tourist. Ohrid is a vacationers paradise, so it’s only a question of when the streams of tourists will be heading towards the gorgeous town. It also affordable, so you’ll actually be able to live nice, eat well and enjoy the stunning view for a reasonable price.

Lake Ohrid takes a good share of the credit when it comes to the stunning view. This town would not have been the same without the lake. The water is crystal clear and the size of it is majestic. I fell in love with the view over this town and its lake. Make sure to visit the Samuels Fortress. The view from the fortress is unbelievable. You can see the entire town, with all of its churches and monasteries as well as the entire lake.

A place that came in on a solid second place after Samuels Fortress was the Church of St John at Kaneo. Also here you’ll experience an amazing view. I do recommend visiting at sunset, or as I did, both in the morning and at sunset. It’s a view that’s impossible to get tired of. The church alone was my favorite building in Ohrid. A fun thing I learned about this town was that it used to have 365 churches, one for each day. This has formed and been a big part of the fascinating architectural layout.

Ohrid is located 3 hours from Skopje by car. It is also possible to get here by bus or plane. Ohrid has it own international airport, where Wizz fly in to this beautiful town for a low cost. If you have a car and want to continue visiting Europe, the boarder of Albania is just on the other side of Lake Ohrid and the boarder of Greece is 2 hours away.
