Experience Caye Caulker

I decided to go by fast boat from Chetumal, Mexico to Caye Caulker. The boat stops in San Pedro for about an hour, for Belizean immigration and customs process. Just arriving in San Pedro, made me way excited. I knew I was going to love this part of my trip.  The colorful houses, the crystal-clear water, the chill vibe.

This is me in my happy place. Out and about, exploring the beautiful places on earth.

After passing Belizean immigration and customs we boarded the boat again and heading to Caye Caulker. I was smiling the entire trip, I was so excited!

Stepping off the boat, onto the dock in Caye Caulker, I just wanted to jump for joy, I had no words for this island.

Right as we stepped foot on the island, a taxibiker asked us if we wanted a taxi. I had no idea of how big the island was but I wanted to try to locate our airbnb by myself, so I replied “No, thank you”. The locals are so nice there, without asking for the direction, the taxibiker asked us where we were going and pointed us in the right direction. That’s when I realized how small the island was. I could see the other side of the island from the side we got off the boat.

Opening the door to the airbnb, I couldn’t have stayed in a more amazing place. It was so spacious, decorated nicely, lovely colors and the most wonderful view. I had to check all the three balconies before sitting down and thinking “its perfect. These next days will be just perfect”. I really recommend this airbnb. It is a bit pricey, but the apartment is gorgeous. It’s a penthouse apartment, with amazing views from all of the balconies. Its called “The Dive House Penthouse”.

The locals are truly so friendly and everything in Caye Caulker is so chill. This is truly the perfect island life. The houses are colorful and the smell of BBQ starts early in the morning and lasts throughout the day. Puppies are playing in the shade and people greet you when you pass them by. It does get real hot real fast, so we liked to go for a walk early in the morning before it got too hot. When we were on our morning walk, we noticed all the people that were getting on a diving or snorkeling boat. This is the number one activity on Caye Caulker. My plan for this part of my trip was really just to relax and enjoy the island.

At this amazing island, I found my favorite restaurant. It had the most amazing food! Reinas, make sure to check this place out. It is a small restaurant, which makes the most delicious local food. When we found this place, we ate here twice in a row. We only tried the scampi dishes, but I’m sure they’re all great.

Caye Caulker is famous for The Split. The Split has it name after the island was split in two by hurricane Hattie in 1961. The famous bar Lazy Lizard is located here, right by the Caribbean Sea. It plays music and gives you the options of sitting in the water enjoying drinks or sitting on the dock. The water is crystal clear, making it tempting for people to regularly cool down in the water.

The island doesn’t have long sandy beaches, but here it didn’t matter to me. You get so lost in the beautiful scenery, so you forget how you get into the water. The water in April was perfect temperature, so tempting that you just spend the entire day in one of the hammocks. A place that did have at least a small, sandy beach was outside of Iguana Reef Inn. This was right by our airbnb, so really convenient for us. I loved spending our days here. After our morning walks we got our towels and sunscreen and spent the entire day here. We only took a break for lunch, but returned to our sunbeds right after. If you need a place to relax but also need to know that there’s a couple of activities there as well, Caye Caulker is my top recommendation. I had a hard time leaving this place.
