Itineraries

One of my best itineraries ever – Cuba, Mexico and Belize

When I told people about my trip to Cuba, Mexico and Belize, the respond was “And you’ll only be traveling for 2 weeks?”

I always do a lot of research before going to a new place. A lot. When I started my researching process about Cuba, I realized that I wouldn’t find all the info I was looking for. When I started reading, majority of all the blogs out there, was written by full time travelers. How could I use the travel tips from people that has all the time in the world?

Luckily, I have some great planning skills so I found the perfect itinerary for these three countries, in just two weeks:

Day 1: Arrived in Havana, Cuba. Spent the day walking around.

Day 2: Had a taxi for the day. This is really worth the money. We started our day at 07 in morning and arrived back at our casa at 11 pm. We went to Playa Giron (Bay of pigs), Cienfuegos and Trinidad. We also stoped by the ocean a couple of places to dip our toes in the Caribbean Sea.

Day 3: Spent the day in Havana. Walked along the Malecon, saw the lasts sights that we wanted to see and took our last pictures of the beautiful city.

Day 4: Had a taxi for the day and went to Viñales. Really recommend this place! Such a beautiful area. It took us about 3 hours in an old vintage car, so we left Havana about 10 am and was back at 7 pm.

After our four days in Cuba, we flew to Cancun, Mexico.

Day 1: Landed in Cancun and took the ADO bus to Playa del Carmen. I did a lot of research and found out that Cancun was not the place to stay. We had our base in Playa del Carmen.

Day 2: Beach day in Playa del Carmen.

Day 3: Chichen Itza. If you’ll only stay in the area, I would recommend hiring a car. We took the bus from Playa del Carmen and the bus ride is about 3,5 hours. The reason why we didn’t hire a car, was because we were going to take the ferry from Chetumal to Caye Caulker, Belize. It would be really expensive for us to deliver the car in Chetumal and the busses are quite cheap in Mexico, so easy choice for us. The busses are great but they really hit the A/C. Remember to bring a sweater!

Day 4: Tulum. Tulum is only an hour away from Playa del Carmen. We spent the day at the ruins as well as snorkeling with rays and turtles.

Then we were ready for Belize! We took the 4,5 hours bus ride to Chetumal, then the ferry to Caye Caulker. The ferry takes about 2,5 hours + an hour in San Pedro, to pass immigration. 3,5 hours later, we arrived Caye Caulker. I just fell in love. I knew right away that this was my kind of island.

We stayed at Caye for four days. Caye Calker is famous for the amazing snorkeling and diving possibilities, but we passed on this. Caye Caulker is definitely one of the most amazing places I’ve been so far. It has truly the Caribbean vibe, the water is crystal clear and the best food I’ve ever tasted. This was a place I woke up at 6 am and truly didn’t mind. I just wanted to go outside and enjoy the island.

This trip is one of my best so far. The combination of an amazing and different country such as Cuba, the history of the Mayan people and then relax at a beautiful island that feels like home, before actually going home.
