Where to stay

Where to stay in Ohrid

Before going to Ohrid, we pre-booked a place that really, really didn’t meet our expectations. I don’t mind staying at a place with a low standard, but I do mind when people are selling something that’s miles from the reality. Once we checked in, we knew we had to find another place.

To keep it short: Don’t stay at Park Plaza Golden View.

I won’t go into too many details, but our experience was horrible. We went for a dinner in town, found a place that had wifi and booked a new place to stay.

The bright side of this experience: We discovered Villa Varosh! This place was not even ready yet when we booked our trip. It opened June 2019, just a week before our stay. The loveliest place in Ohrid and I highly recommend staying here.

Villa Varosh, the place to stay in Ohrid

Before going we thought we wanted to stay a bit out of the town, at a resort by the lake but after exploring Ohrid I really recommend staying in town. There are a couple of places you can lay by the lake in town as well. If you want the most beautiful and loveliest place in Orhid, stay at Villa Varosh.

The villa was renovated and opened for business June 2019. We had a beautiful lake view room. When entering the room, I fell in love at once. Everything was nice and clean and the room was nicely decorated. The towels were super soft and they even smelled good. We’d also gotten different toiletries, water bottles and a Macedonian red wine. I loved the balcony; it gives you an amazing view over the lake. We used to sit there and enjoy the view every afternoon before heading out to dinner. Such a peaceful place.

We told our host the story about our first booking, how we weren’t pleased with it and booked this place instead. She said to us “Here’s everything new. No one has even slept in that bed or used that pillow.” That really made me so happy after having a bad experience at the Park Plaza Golden View.

We were lucky to get a full tour of the house and I can for sure recommend the penthouse apartment. It’s gorgeous, with a breathtaking view. Unfortunately, it was not available when we were there, but if we’re back in Ohrid at some point, we’ll stay at the penthouse apartment. It is a bit more pricey, but worth the money in my opinion. If you just want a room, I recommend a lake view room. We loved our stay here.

The only downside at the time of our visit was that we had to pay in cash. Maybe this has changed since we were there, but something I would check prior to check-out, just in case.
